OBJETIVOS DEL PROYECTO:
Why do we want to carry out this project?
As noted in the 2019 annual work programme for the implementation of Erasmus+, section 2.2.3. “Youth: specific policy priorities”, it is a priority to address issues related to support youth workers in developing and sharing effective methods in reaching out to disadvantaged young people, foster the inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities and also open up youth work to cross-sectorial cooperation allowing greater synergies across all fields of actions concerning young people.
All partners, being faced with all the above issues, after conducting a SWOT analyses that targeted multiple stakeholders form their communities, found a common solution: creating youth community organizers for social inclusion (YCO). YCO is a strategy that trains young people to engage in collective action to improve the functioning of institutions that directly affect them. YCO targets the education system, the immigration system, the juvenile justice system, and also they work to change policy and practice in specific issue areas of economic justice and environmental justice.
This project will enable 33 youth workers (YW) to become architects of their own lives through their new role of Youth Community Organizer. As shown on the Council Resolution of 26 November 2018, the new EU Youth Strategy 2019-2027 supports young’s people personal development and growth to autonomy, build their resilience and equip them with life skills to cope with a changing world.
Thus, the aim of the project is to improve the capacity of partner NGOs to be able to increase the participation of disadvantaged youth through community organizing methods and instruments.
Specific objectives:
1. Developing 33 YW’s competences to understand the strategic approach behind youth community organizing and be able to use/ adapt techniques in order to support working with disadvantaged youth while guiding them through different steps: beneficiaries, partners and initiators, within 10 months;
2. Develop competences specific to youth community organizing: group building, advocacy, building leadership, campaign building and implementation, for 33 YWs within 10 months;
3. Increase commitment and involvement of 33 YWs in using youth community organizing techniques while working with disadvantaged youth, within 10 months;
4. Creating awareness among 11 partner NGOs and at least 100 other local NGOs concerning the importance of community organizing and the positive impact generated by it, within 10 months.
The issues and needs addressed by this project come from the sad reality that many youths are alienated from decision making. They are used to adults deciding for them and often do not know or understand what these decisions mean and the way they are affected by them. On the long run, lack of participation in decision making transforms youth into passive citizens that will not stand up for their rights and not be able to make productive changes in their communities.
Given the project partners profile and the fact that they all work with youth with fewer opportunities, the specific community issues are connected to tackling lack of opportunities, challenges to human rights, inclusion and equity.
Consequently, through the project, we will be exploring a specific type of approach (youth community organizing) that focuses on important elements of youth becoming a productive member of society by being able to take action in solving pressing issues in their communities, defending their rights.
The project will equip the youth workers with a step-by-step methodology that includes leadership, tactical workshops, and training to support them develop critical understandings and skills, how to organize direct action campaigns focused on particular policies or practices where they work side by side with YOUTH, exert their power to make their demands for change heard by adults in positions of authority.
